Advertisements I have serious problems with - Part 2

All of us have seen India's biggest wedding teaser featuring Virat Kohli and Anushka Sharma sowing the idea of marriage with the famous line, "main hamesha khayal rakhoonga", while back in the day they wouldn't even openly talk about seeing each other. This wedding teaser was disguised as a clothing brand commercial for Manyavar and soon after came the news of their secret wedding in Italy which was followed by another commercial dealing with the reality of life after marriage.

THIS Manyavar adversisment is what I have serious problems with.

Problem No. 1 - Looking cute is a marriage savior

The ad starts with Virat and Anushka asking a couple to reconsider getting married by complaining about each other (typical mia-biwi), but paces into the realization that it is not that bad after all. Virat had to make "killer bed tea" to win brownie points but all Anushka had to do was "look cute".
Anushka: Are idhar towel udhar joote, subha paanch baje parde khol dega aur - killer bed tea banake pilayega.
Virat: Carom mein harne par royegi, peetigi par na (long pause) cute lagegi.
Cute lagegi? That's it? Bro you had to get up, walk to the kitchen, boil water with proper proportions of sugar, tea and milk in it and serve it to her in bed to impress her and all she had to do was look cute? That to while smacking you!
Imagine Virat and Anushka at couple counsellor trying to save a marriage, "So you both believe you are not compatible ... hmmm ... (counsellor to Anushka) have you tried looking cute? ... (counsellor to Virat) get her to smack you until you see the cuteness."

Problem No. 2 - It actually worked

The couple standing there with garlands waiting to get hitched "actually" reconsidered their decision until Virat and Anushka pushed them to fall in the same well that they lived in, that is marriage. I mean if your relationship is that fragile that a schizophrenic couple could play with your mind after you have invited thousands of guests and spent crores to feed them, then you really shouldn't marry. Period.

Problem No. 3 - Hamesha

The writer must have grown up on fairy-tale stories that started with "Once upon a time..." and ended on "forever..." and literally translated that to "hamesha" and forced it everywhere.
Virat: Main HAMESHA khayal rakhoonga
Anushka: Main bhi
Anushka: Par HAMESHA khayal rakhega
Virat: HAMESHA!
Tagline: Manyavar Mohey - naye riste naye vaade ... HAMESHA
Social Media Hashtag: Virushka's #saathsaathHAMESHA journey

Disclaimer: This article is not about bashing Virat and Anushka as a couple (they've had enough of it already), neither is it about Manyavar as a brand because I am sure it's the ultimate wedding apparel destination for most. This article is about the portrayal of weddings and mainly about the portrayal of women in it. Too serious? Alright, this article is about being cute. From now on anything and everything I dislike will be CUTE.
